Muscat – Oman’s newly formed national paragliding team is in full preparation mode for the 3rd Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Beach Games, set to take place in Muscat from April 5 to 11.
The event is being organised by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth in collaboration with the Oman Olympic Committee.
The Oman Air Sports Committee is overseeing the team’s training camp, currently being held at the Sports City in Al Musanna.
The two-week indoor camp, led by Italian coach Rafael Benetti, includes theoretical and practical sessions aimed at sharpening the athletes’ skills. Training is being conducted in both morning and evening sessions, with a focus on continuous drills to enhance performance.
The team comprises five athletes, supported by a national coach, a technical director, and an administrative director.
Dr Ahmed Zahir al Alawi, Chairman of the Oman Air Sports Committee, reaffirmed the committee’s commitment to developing air sports in Oman. “We are focused on nurturing young talents who can represent Oman in international competitions,” he said, adding that the committee is working on four key disciplines: Paragliding, kitesurfing, drones, and wireless aircraft.
He highlighted the rapid growth of air sports in the region and Oman’s increasing presence in the field.
“We have selected the best team members with guidance from an international referee and local officials. The upcoming championships will be a great opportunity to showcase Oman’s capabilities in air sports,” he said.
National coach Yaqoub al Hosni praised the athletes’ dedication despite the challenges of training during Ramadan. “Their commitment to maintaining a rigorous training schedule is crucial in ensuring they are fully prepared for Muscat 2025,” he said.
This will be the team’s first major international event on home soil.
