Breaking fast atop Jabal al Hawra

12 Mar 2025 Iftar atop Jabal al Hawra By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – What is it like to break fast a thousand metres above sea level atop a mountain with breathtaking views of Oman’s three most scenic wilayats – Nizwa, Al Hamra and Bahla? To immerse in the experience, the Endurance March Team of Bahla Sports Club organised a special trekking event on Jabal al Hawra (968m) in Bahla, Dakhliyah last Friday.

The event aimed to promote walking as a regular activity while fasting, concluding with an iftar on the mountain peak.

Sharing details of the event, Abdullah bin Sulaiman al Mufarji, head of the Endurance March Team, told Muscat Daily, “The trek began on March 7 at 4:45pm from the gate of the Al Hawra Mountain walkway. Participants completed the 9km trek in about an hour and 15 minutes, experiencing both the physical challenge and tranquility of the landscape during fasting hours.”

Mufarji informed that the primary goal of the trek was to promote fitness, while embracing the unique challenge of walking during Ramadan, culminating in iftar atop the mountain. “This effort not only encouraged physical activity during Ramadan but also highlighted the scenic beauty of Oman.”

Upon reaching the summit, participants replaced the old flag of the sultanate with a new one in a symbolic gesture, and as the call for Maghrib prayers echoed, the group gathered to break their fast taking in the sunset and panoramic views of Bahla, Nizwa and Al Hamra.

Mufarji highlighted the team’s ongoing efforts to promote health and wellness. Established in 2015, the team has organised numerous trekking events across Oman, including a march on November 18, 2024 which drew over 8,000 participants.

The team is also credited with establishing a 10km trekking path in Jabal al Hawra, now a popular route for fitness enthusiasts and nature lovers. Emphasising the importance of safe exercise during fasting, Mufarji advised participants to avoid overexertion and encouraged group activities for added safety.

“Last Friday’s event successfully combined exercise, adventure and community engagement, highlighting the importance of maintaining health during Ramadan while embracing the beauty of Oman’s natural landscapes,” Mufarji added.
