Cairo, Egypt – Israel’s decision to halt humanitarian aid to Gaza has drawn widespread condemnation from Arab countries and aid organisations, with Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Jordan criticising the move as a violation of international law.
The blockade, ordered by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday, comes in response to what Israel claims is Hamas’ refusal to accept a ceasefire extension proposed by the United States. The first phase of the truce, which allowed for increased humanitarian assistance, expired on Saturday.
Egypt, which played a key role in brokering the ceasefire, denounced Israel’s actions as a “flagrant violation” of the agreement, accusing it of using starvation as “a weapon against the Palestinian people.” Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Ministry described the blockade as “blackmail” and “collective punishment,” calling on the international community to intervene. Jordan also condemned the move, warning of its humanitarian impact.
Aid agencies have raised alarms over the dire consequences for Gaza’s population, which is already suffering from severe shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. Hamas, meanwhile, has accused Israel of attempting to derail the ceasefire and described the aid blockade as a “war crime.”
Tensions remain high as Israel insists that Hamas must release more hostages before a ceasefire can be extended, while Hamas demands progress towards a permanent end to the war.
