Sur – The Zakat Committee in Sur, South Sharqiyah is actively working to enhance social solidarity during Ramadan by distributing 800 iftar meals daily.

These meals will be prepared by the committee and handed out to local communities as part of its efforts to assist the needy during this blessed month.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Adel al Ghailani, a member of the committee, informed that it operates under Ministry of Endowments and Religious Affairs and aims to also support 1,000 underprivileged families this Ramadan. “Each family will receive a food basket containing essential items like rice, flour, coffee, sugar, tomato paste, dates and powdered milk.”

The committee will distribute the 800 iftar meals daily in mosques across Sur, as well as to students from low-income families.

According to Ghailani, the committee has 80 volunteers who will be responsible for distributing meals to college students and expatriate workers in areas such as Tiwi and Ras al Hadd.

The committee’s wide-ranging programmes include zakat, sadakh, Eid clothing, orphan sponsorship, student sponsorship and family empowerment. Its initiatives not only focus on providing support during Ramadan but also aim to spread the spirit of solidarity and integration within the community throughout the year.

To ensure the support reaches those in genuine need, the committee has a strict process for selecting beneficiaries.

Individuals seeking zakat or donations must provide documentation such as bank statement, salary certificate from themselves or a family member, rental details, utility expenses and loan installments. “This thorough verification process ensures that aid is directed to those who need it the most,” Ghailani said.
