Muscat – The historic neighbourhoods of Ruwi and Muttrah are set to undergo revitalisation aimed at restoring their vibrancy and economic appeal, according to H E Dr Khalfan bin Said bin Mubarak al Shuaili, Minister of Housing and Urban Planning.

Speaking at the ministry’s annual meeting last week, H E Shuaili said many residents are leaving these areas in search of new opportunities and housing and that the government is working on a comprehensive plan to rejuvenate these key districts.

A core element of the renewal strategy, according to the minister, is active community involvement. He pointed out that a significant portion of real estate in Ruwi and Muttrah is owned by citizens, and their participation is crucial in ensuring sustainable development. “The community plays a vital role in the success of this initiative,” he said. “The government’s role is to support and facilitate.”

H E Shuaili informed that during recent discussions with former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, global urban renewal strategies were explored, and ideas were exchanged on how these strategies could be tailored to Oman’s unique needs. Furthermore, he confirmed that talks with the Minister of Finance on reinvigorating Ruwi and Muttrah have been positive.

While details of the revitalisation plans are still being finalised, H E Shuaili said he was confident the project will breathe new life into these iconic neighbourhoods.
