Oman’s diverse landscape offers an ideal setting for camping. However, with the rise in tourism, the demand for camping areas has grown manifolds – which has given rise to illegal campings in non-designated areas in various parts of Oman. To counter this, authorities recently dismantled 16 illegal tourist camps in Muscat as part of efforts to regulate tourism and protect the environment. This has sparked discussions on whether more official camping zones should be introduced. If so where? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said:
Said al Harthi, Businessman
Yes, authorities should designate more legal camping areas with proper facilities. This will help prevent illegal camps while promoting eco-friendly tourism. I suggest areas such as Seeb coastline, and near Yiti for controlled camping experiences.
Arti Luthra, Teacher
Camping is a popular outdoor activity enjoyed by all. Authorities can even think of installing barbecue facilities at designated camping sites in future. Additionally, it will help in promoting tourism. Some of the ideal locations could be near Bimmah Sinkhole, Quriyat Beach, Al Bustan Hills and many others as country has diverse landscape – from mountains to beaches and deserts.
Ali al Ghafri, Photographer
Yes, more areas should be designated to ensure accessibility for businesses and event sponsorships. We should start with areas like Yiti and Shatti al Qurm and add more places in the future.
Rashid al Siyabi, University student
Yes, but authorities should also focus on awareness campaigns about responsible camping. Many people don’t follow clean-up rules. I suggest areas for camping such as Jabal Shams, and Sifah beach.
Ali Ekak, Environmental activist
Yes, but these areas should have strict guidelines to protect nature. Unregulated camping activities harm wildlife and disrupt natural habitats. Wadi al Arbaieen, Jabal Sifah, and Quriyat coastline with designated eco-friendly spots will be good areas for camping.
Khalid al Rawahi, Adventurer
Absolutely! Muscat has many great outdoor locations that can be developed into safe, legal camping areas with facilities such as restrooms and waste disposal systems. I think Bandar al Khairan, Jebel Akhdar foothills, and the areas near Ras al Hamra will be good suggested areas for camping.
Salim al Balushi, Small business owner
More designated camping zones will boost tourism and local businesses. Properly managed areas can attract more visitors and improve the economy. Ras al Hadd, Masirah Island, Jabal Hafeet can be developed for premium camping experiences.
V K Suresh, Engineer
Families need safe and accessible camping zones with basic amenities. This will encourage responsible tourism and outdoor activities. Al Ashkara in South Shrqiyah, outskirts of Qurum Park, and Yiti Beach are good spots for camping.
