Entry fee at Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque aimed at enhancing visitor experience

12 Jan 2025 Entry fee at Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque aimed at enhancing visitor experience

Muscat – The Sultan Qaboos Higher Centre for Culture and Science has clarified that the recently introduced entry fee for the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, widely discussed on social media, is part of efforts to better regulate and enhance visitor management.

The move comes in response to the increasing number of visitors to the iconic landmark, which is Oman’s top tourist destination. The administration noted that the growing footfall, particularly during peak tourism season, has made it challenging to ensure smooth organisation and maintain the sanctity of the mosque.

‘The Grand Mosque is not only a spiritual haven but also a masterpiece of architectural, historical, and cultural significance,’ the centre stated. ‘Visitors are drawn to its heritage value, as well as its role in showcasing Oman’s historical contributions to mosque architecture and Islamic heritage.’

To address these challenges, the Grand Mosque administration has partnered with the private sector to manage visitor services and enhance the cultural presentation of the mosque. The partnership includes opportunities for small and medium enterprises to compete in delivering these services.

As part of the new arrangements:

– A contracted company will ensure modest dress requirements and streamline visitor organisation.

– 35 Omani guides, proficient in various languages, have been appointed to lead visitors through a carefully curated programme.

‘The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque remains open to Muslims for the five daily prayers, with its religious, cultural, and scientific facilities accessible without any fees,’ the centre added.
