Muscat – Two Omani films – Al Darrooj, directed by Dr Humaid bin Saeed al Amri, and Sand Girl, directed by Salah al Hadhrami – claimed a total of four awards at the recently concluded Asian Talent International Film Festival 2024 held in Ahmednagar, India.
Amri shared his excitement with Muscat Daily informing that Al Darrooj won three awards at the festival – Best Short Film, Best Short Feature Film and Best Child Actor. “This recognition underscores the continued success of Omani cinema on the global stage and reflects the dedication of Omani filmmakers to use cinema as a platform to showcase the country’s rich cultural heritage.”
Al Darrooj has won numerous awards both locally and internationally earlier, reiterating its wide appeal and strong connection with audiences and critics alike.
The film tackles an important social issue, telling the story of a young widow who, while caring for her disabled child, faces societal rejection. The film poignantly captures her emotional struggle as she navigates the difficult balance between securing her future and remaining devoted to her son.
Hadhrami’s Sand Girl won the Best Documentary Award at the festival. He described the ten-minute film as a depiction of a woman living in Sharqiyah Sands, who, despite her modest means, graciously hosts and honours her guests. The film highlights the traditional Omani and Arab custom of hospitality, emphasising that this welcoming tradition transcends the guest’s nationality.
“These awards represent a significant achievement for Omani cinema,” Hadhrami added. “It’s an honour to see our work gaining recognition on an international platform. Sand Girl celebrates the essence of Omani hospitality, a core value of our culture.”
With over 26 awards in 2024 between them, Al Darrooj and Sand Girl have contributed to further elevating the profile of Omani filmmaking in the international film industry.
