Muscat all set to celebrate Christmas

21 Dec 2024 Muscat all set to celebrate Christmas By ANIRBAN RAY

Muscat – With Christmas around the corner, Muscat wears a colourful look as a festive vibe sweeps across the city. From dazzling decorations in malls to Nativity sets at homes, the celebrations blend the spirit of Christmas and Oman’s unique charm. The dipping mercury has added to the festivities; clear skies and a gentle breeze creating the perfect backdrop for gatherings at churches and beaches adorned with streamers and twinkling lights. Christmas trees, small and big, with shining stars, baubles and globes have taken pride of space and Santa Claus appearances are bringing smiles to children and adults alike.

Sunil Dsouza, ex-CEO of a travel and aviation firm, described Christmas as a time of joy and peace, a season that embodies the spirit of celebrations. “It’s about cherishing moments with close family, spreading good vibes and embracing happiness. Most importantly, it’s a time to celebrate friendship and relationships, making the festive season truly special.”

The festive mood is “infectious” for John Reeves, an oil and gas professional. “We love visiting malls, Oman Avenues Mall in particular, to soak in the holiday spirit. The decorations and activities make it feel like Christmas back home.”

Markets are doing brisk Christmas business offering everything from handmade crafts to freshly baked cookies and cakes. The bustling atmosphere at the churches in Ruwi and Ghala are a highlight of the season.

Philippe Kronberg, General Manager of Shangri-La Barr al Jissah, shared his excitement about the festivities at the resort. “We’re thrilled to celebrate Christmas in Oman’s unique setting. Although there’s no snow, the weather is delightful, and we’ve created a magical atmosphere with the tallest tree in Oman, standing 40 feet tall. It took us a week to set up, and the energy and joy it brings are unmatched.”

Hotels and resorts across the sultanate are adding to the festive cheer with elegant décor, themed dinners and family-friendly activities. At Sheraton Oman Hotel, a 14 feet Christmas tree stands as the centrepiece of celebrations. “This year, our theme is blue and white, and we’ve taken a creative approach by designing an inverted gingerbread house with cakes hanging like stars,” said Shrey Mehta, Director of Food and Beverage. “It’s been wonderful to see guests enjoying the festive atmosphere and our special culinary offerings.”

Homemaker Jessica Suresh said, “The warmth here is different, not just in the weather but in the people and the celebrations. We enjoyed plum cakes and hot chocolate at Snow Oman. My teenage son, who’s visiting from India, loved every moment of it.”
