Muscat – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has announced a 51km mountain hike set to take place on December 26 and 27 in North Sharqiyah. Organised as part of the Sur: Arab Tourism Capital for 2024 celebrations, the two-day adventure will offer participants a unique opportunity to explore the stunning landscapes of the Eastern Hajar Mountains.
Called Challenge and Explore Trail Route (E35), the hike will take adventurers through majestic mountains, picturesque valleys and charming mountain villages. The hike will begin near a pond close to the village of Maqil in Wadi Bani Khalid at an altitude of 640m. The trail will gradually ascend to the highest peak overlooking Wadi Bani Khalid. Over a 20km stretch, hikers will follow a moderately steep mountain path, eventually reaching a campsite near a transmission station at an elevation of around 2,050m above sea level. The total ascent for Day 1 will be approximately 2,000m.
On Day 2, hikers will descend from the campsite at Halout village, first following a dirt road for 10km, and then a mountain trail. The descent will continue for another 11km, eventually leading to a paved road stretching the final 9km of the event. The hike will conclude at a bridge near Tiwi township, marking the 50km endpoint, with a total descent of around 2,700m.
The event promises participants awe-inspiring views, a chance to immerse themselves in Oman’s rich natural heritage and the camaraderie of fellow adventurers. It underscores Oman’s dedication to promoting eco-tourism and adventure activities as part of the celebrations for Sur’s designation as Arab Tourism Capital for 2024.
To ensure a safe and comfortable hiking experience, MHT has outlined essential gear requirements for participants. Hikers are advised to bring a backpack, trail shoes, a first aid kit, a windproof jacket, a headlamp, a sun hat and at least 2lt of water. These items are crucial for navigating the varying conditions along the trail.
For added comfort, participants may also bring optional gear such as trekking poles, sunglasses, gloves, thermal shirts and sunscreen. While not mandatory, these items can enhance the overall hiking experience.
Each participant is permitted to prepare a dropbag containing essentials like extra clothing, personal hygiene items and a cold-weather jacket. The ministry will transport these bags, which will be available for pick-up at the campsite.
To secure a spot for this adventure, participants are required to make a refundable deposit of RO10. Registration will close on Tuesday, December 24.
