Muscat – Happiness Village Carnival, an event dedicated to children with disabilities and their families, was held on Friday under the patronage of H H Dr Fahad bin Julanda al Said, Vice-Chancellor of Sultan Qaboos University. The event celebrated International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
Organised by H H Sayyida Hujaija bint Jaifer al Said in collaboration with Civil Aviation Club, the carnival provided a safe, fun and inclusive space for children with disabilities. It featured several interactive educational and recreational activities that showcased the abilities and talents of children with disabilities while offering their families an opportunity to connect and share experiences.
Around 2,000 children from government and private rehabilitation centres, as well as children from various associations and expatriate communities, including Indian and Pakistani schools, attended the event.
A wide variety of activities were organised to engage and entertain children. Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority participated with a fire truck and ambulance, offering hands-on educational activities. Other activities included science labs, arts and crafts, board games and virtual reality games.
Children also enjoyed rides in luxury cars and on bicycles and horses. Magic shows presented by UAE magician Moein al Bastaki drew large crowds, while circus performances, face painting, henna art and a petting zoo brought added excitement. A dog show and appearances by cartoon characters kept young attendees engaged throughout the day. Several leading Omani small and medium enterprises engaged in children’s entertainment provided recreational activities free of charge. Food and beverages were also made available to all attendees at no cost.
Speaking at the event, H H Sayyida Hujaija expressed her gratitude to strategic partners and private sector sponsors. “This event enhances inclusion and empowerment for people with disabilities,” she said. “It also allows individuals with disabilities to showcase their creativity and talents. The carnival serves as a platform for parents to interact, sharing their experiences, ideas and stories about common disability issues.”
Highlighting the importance of such events, Sumaira Chowdhury, Unicef Representative in the sultanate, said, “Unicef Oman is honoured to participate in the Happiness Village Carnival, a remarkable initiative by H H Sayyida Hujaija to celebrate International Day of Persons with Disabilities.”
“This event exemplifies the power of inclusivity, engagement and community mobilisation in creating opportunities for children of all abilities to thrive. Together, we reaffirm our commitment to ensuring every child in Oman can reach their full potential in a nurturing and caring environment.”
