Sur – Seventeen Omani artists have collaborated to create ‘Al Sawari Wall’, a 133sqm mural in the Masar area of Jabal al Eid in Sur, South Sharqiyah.

This artistic landmark highlights Sur’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing elements of traditional architecture, maritime history, arts, handicrafts, engravings, decorations, writings and its distinctive costumes in celebration of its designation as Arab Tourism Capital 2024.

The project was supported by Omani Society for Fine Arts in South Sharqiyah as part of the 27th Literary and Artistic Forum held from October 20 to 24.

Saeed bin Ali al Alawi, one of the participating artists, stated that the mural represents Sur’s civilisation, cultural and historic maritime legacy. “The initiative aligns with sustainable cultural work, making culture a lifestyle and fulfilling community aspirations while promoting the city’s tourism appeal.”

The mural was created by prominent Omani artists from various governorates. Special colours and dyes were used to produce a cohesive, vibrant artwork that enhances the beauty of Sur and the governorate as a whole.

Alawi added that the mural reflects the city’s cultural and historical landmarks while fostering and refining artistic talent. “The project supports the development of art skills and contributes to the tourism profile of Sur, creating a new attraction for visitors as it celebrates its status as  Arab Tourism Capital 2024.”
