Dhofar Municipality commits RO34mn for road projects in Salalah

30 Oct 2024 Dhofar commits RO34mn for road projects in Salalah

Salalah – Dhofar Municipality has launched four major road projects in Salalah, investing RO34mn to enhance infrastructure and improve traffic flow in the governorate. With completion targeted by June 2025, just before the annual khareef season, the projects aim to boost connectivity across the city, minimise congestion, and improve tourist access during peak months.

Abdullah bin Mohammed Bawain, Director of Projects and Technical Affairs at Dhofar Municipality, noted that traffic control plans and diversions have been coordinated with the Royal Oman Police to reduce disruptions as much as possible. “We are committed to managing construction efficiently, particularly during the khareef season,” Bawain said, adding that essential works on major roads will continue after the tourist season.

Among the projects, the Sultan Qaboos Street dualisation is the largest, costing RO16.3mn. It will convert the 9km stretch from Qasr al Hosn’s traffic signals to the Dahariz roundabout into a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction, internal shoulders, longitudinal parking spaces, and an 800m service road in the Dahariz area.

The Al Farooq Street dual carriageway project began in March 2024 and has an estimated cost of RO4.5mn. This 7.6km project connects Al Maamoura–Razat Street to Salalah–Muscat Road, with two lanes in each direction and 7m-wide service roads on both sides. Planned features include three traffic signals, longitudinal parking, box culverts, and a rainwater drainage network. Paving is set to begin shortly after completing the necessary box crossings and concrete barriers.

For Sultan Taimur Street, dualisation began in early April 2024 and will continue for two years, budgeted at RO5.7mn. The project covers 6.8km and includes parking, pedestrian pathways, traffic signals at key intersections, rainwater drainage, and new lighting systems to enhance road safety.

Additionally, the Ateen Tunnel project aims to streamline traffic at the busy intersection of November 18 Street and Ateen Street. Starting in early April 2024 with an allocated budget of RO7.5mn, this project will transform the roundabout into a tunnel, 1,350m in length and featuring four lanes. Once completed, November 18 Street will expand to four lanes in each direction over a 2.7km distance, with additional bypasses in all four directions. The project includes seven service roads and multiple access points, covering a combined road length of over 9km.

With side service roads nearing completion, tunnel construction is expected to begin mid-November, while remaining diversions are slated for November’s first half. Dhofar Municipality anticipates the roads will be fully accessible by June 2025, marking a significant upgrade in Salalah’s infrastructure and ensuring smoother traffic flow for both residents and tourists.
