Muscat – In recognition of the contributions of Omani women to the oil and gas sector, the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in partnership with the Oman Society for Petroleum Services (OPAL) and leading energy companies, has launched the ‘You Are the Energy Award’.
The award will honour the innovations and achievements of women in the industry, particularly in advancing sustainability and clean energy initiatives.
The launch took place during the ministry’s celebration of Omani Women’s Day, held under the patronage of H H Sayyida Dr Mona bint Fahd bin Mahmoud al Said. The event was attended by H E Eng Salim bin Nasser al Aufi, Minister of Energy and Minerals, alongside senior officials and CEOs from major companies in the oil and gas sector.
At the event, the role of women in the industry was highlighted, with a focus on the approximately 3,000 Omani women employed in various capacities, including 243 in leadership and supervisory roles. Women in the sector have excelled in both administrative and technical positions, with some leading operations in oil fields and power stations.
The event also recognised Omani women’s participation in leadership programmes such as the National CEO Programme 2024, underscoring the country’s commitment to preparing women for key leadership roles. Omani women have been instrumental in driving national energy projects, including renewable energy ventures and innovations in gas exploration techniques.
They have contributed to the development of refinery and petrochemical projects and the implementation of systems like the Change Management System and Advanced Radial Pump Monitoring.
Omani women’s achievements extend beyond national borders, with recognition in international forums and prestigious awards, including the Pioneering Women in Energy Award. Initiatives like the Shell Oman Women’s Network, the Sidra National Youth Development Programme, and the Tasmu Initiative for Developing Leadership Competencies continue to support and empower women in the sector.
The event saw participation from major energy companies, including Petroleum Development Oman, OQ Group, Oman LNG, Occidental Oman, BP Oman, and others, highlighting a collaborative effort to promote women’s roles in the industry.
Discussion sessions were also held, focusing on women’s leadership in the oil and gas sector. Participants shared their experiences, addressing challenges related to career progression, work-life balance, and the importance of mentorship. The conversations emphasised the need for diversity and inclusion to ensure a sustainable future for women in the industry.
