Muscat – Omani freediver Omar Abdullah al Ghailani has made the sultanate proud by claiming a silver medal and setting a new Asian record at the 2024 CMAS 8th World Championship Freediving Depth held in Kalamata, Greece from October 2 to 13.
Conducted by Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS), the championship featured 160 divers from 49 countries, including Italy, France, Colombia, Mexico, Russia, Poland and Indonesia.
Ghailani set a new Asian record in the Constant Weight FIM men’s category by diving 107m. “It took me many years to set this Asian record,” he said proudly, reflecting on the hard work and dedication that led to this achievement.
Speaking to Muscat Daily from Greece, Ghailani noted that this feat has come as the 2025 season approaches. His determination and focus propelled him to success and raise the Omani flag on the international stage.
Reflecting on the challenges faced during the competition, Ghailani said, “The waves were fierce, and battling the cold water tested my limits.”
Performed without breathing apparatus, freediving is a test of not only physical endurance but also mental resilience, qualities Ghailani has mastered through rigorous training.
