Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) launched a campaign to combat infestation of coconut leaf beetles – Brontispa longissimi – in Dhofar, on Sunday.
The ministry has assembled field teams equipped with all necessary resources to carry out both ground and aerial spraying operations, utilising drones for enhanced efficiency.
The campaign was launched under the patronage of Hamed bin Awad Sawakhron, a member of Majlis A’Shura representing Salalah.
The goals of the campaign, running till June 13, are to safeguard coconut palms, foster the protection and growth of the agricultural sector, and aid farmers in pest control efforts.
Eng Rashid bin Saeed al Ghafri, Director General of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in Dhofar, informed that the current campaign is the fifth one to be undertaken in the governorate.
“It covers both Salalah and Taqah and is part of an annual programme to spray date palm trees, conducted in collaboration with various government agencies and volunteers.”
The Directorate of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Water Resources in Dhofar organised a joint meeting of the governmental and private agencies with farmers to discuss the latest developments in the spraying process and the campaign’s schedule.
