Muscat – The sultanate will be affected by another depression, more severe than the current one, starting on Friday and continuing  until Saturday.

Aisha bint Juma al Qasimia, meteorologist at Civil Aviation Authority, informed that rains will be heavier on Saturday, pointing out that this is the season for winter depressions.

The latest forecast by the National Multi Hazard Early Warning Centre indicates heavy thunderstorms accompanied by active downdraft winds and hailstones from Tuesday evening until Wednesday evening. 

The affected governorates include Dhahirah, Dakhliyah, North Sharqiyah, South Sharqiyah and Al Wusta, with precipitation ranging from 20mm to 50mm, potentially leading to flooded wadis and wind speeds ranging from 15 to 35 knots.  

‘The sea is expected to rise 2-3.5m in the Musandam coast along the Sea of Oman with reduction in horizontal visibility during thundershowers,’ it forecast.

According to Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources data, Buraimi recorded 110mm of rainfall from Monday to Tuesday. Khasab recorded 86mm, Sohar 60mm, Dibba 50mm, Madha 41mm, Shinas 40mm,Mahda 36mm, Dhank 26mm, Ibri 23mm, Liwa 20mm and Saham 18mm.

School hours cut

The Directorate General of Education in Muscat reduced school hours for students in both public and private institutions on Tuesday to 12 noon, and suspended all evening schools.

Meanwhile, Royal Oman Police arrested a citizen who tried to cross a flooded wadi in Jabal Akhdar, Dakhliyah. ‘ROP urges people to avoid venturing into wadis,’ it stated

Civil Aviation Authority advised the public to be cautions during rains. It specifically urged all not to cross wadis, avoid low-lying areas, and not go sailing during the alert period. ‘Staying informed and following safety guidelines is crucial to mitigate risks associated with adverse weather conditions.’
