Muscat – The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism (MHT) has delegated the management and operations of 15 key heritage sites to local companies and institutions.

This initiative aims to augment the heritage sector’s economic contribution and diversify tourist attractions.

MHT data indicates heritage sites in Oman attracted 80,317 visitors this year till the end of September.

Ziana bint Mohammed al Harasi, head of Rehabilitation and Development Department for Historical Sites at MHT, stated that the chosen companies aim to elevate the visitor experience on multiple fronts – cognitive, tourist and cultural. “The projects are designed to offer both direct and indirect employment, bolster productive families, create marketing avenues for artisans, and host year-round events and activities,” she elaborated.

Among the key heritage sites selected for this initiative are Nizwa Fort and Jibrin Castle in Dakhliyah, Nakhl Fort in South Batinah, and Muttrah Fort in Muscat governorate.

On the list are Kut Bayt al Askar in Taqah, Wadi Duka Reserve in Thumrait and waterfront shops at the archaeological site of Al Baleed in Salalah, all in Dhofar.

MHT has handed over the management of several other archaeological landmarks, including Sur al Khamis in South Batinah, Kut Hamran and Rakhyut Fort in Dhofar, Bait ar Rudaydah Castle and Bahla Fort in Dakhliyah, Khabura Fort in North Batinah, Al Mirani Fort in Muscat, and Luwi Fort in North Batinah.

Abdullah bin Mohammad al Harthi, partner and founder of the company responsible for managing and operating Jibrin Castle in Bahla, Dakhliyah, described the project as rewarding.

His firm was among the first to contract directly with MHT for investing in historical sites.

Harthi noted that the company has successfully navigated numerous challenges and elevated visitors’ experience at the site by improving maintenance, security and staffing.

Further development plans have been set in motion to make Jibrin Castle more appealing to tourists.

He emphasised the extensive involvement of the local community in these efforts, which aids in the site’s sustainability.

Harthi informed that sustainability efforts include regular maintenance and partnerships with various local entities to ensure the site’s long-term upkeep.
