Municipality to convert Al Khuwair service road to one-way

5 Oct 2023 By

Muscat – In a bid to enhance traffic flow and accessibility in the vibrant commercial hub of Al Khuwair, Muscat Municipality is undertaking a major project, converting the existing service road adjacent to Sultan Qaboos Street into a one-way road.

The comprehensive project entails converting approximately 6km of service roads into one-way lanes, each accommodating two lanes in the same direction. The transformation begins at the intersection of Al Khuwair street intersection, Road No. (3534), and extends to the Ministries Street intersection under the bridge.

To further optimize traffic, two additional entry points to Sultan Qaboos Main Street will be established midway along the service route and at its end, minimizing travel times for commuters.

As part of the project, certain side roads will be converted into one-way lanes, ensuring a more seamless flow of traffic throughout the area. The infrastructure enhancement plan includes the construction of new pedestrian sidewalks, improved parking facilities, and upgraded utility services.

The goals of the project are multifaceted. Firstly, by directing traffic in one direction, the project aims to mitigate congestion, eliminating the need for turns and reducing the likelihood of traffic hazards. This strategic approach contributes to noise reduction and enhances overall safety.

Moreover, the project seeks to boost traffic efficiency, ease of movement, and access between internal neighborhoods and surrounding regions more convenient for residents and commuters alike.

The project seeks to serve public facilities and enhance commercial activity in the Al Khuwair region.

Beyond the pragmatic aspects, the project aspires to contribute to the development and improvement of the area, adding aesthetic touches that align with the city’s vision for a more appealing and livable urban landscape.
