Oman to develop national system to track greenhouse gases

3 Oct 2023 Oman to develop national system to track GHGs By MOHAMMED TAHA

Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) is set to launch a system to track greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions across Oman, advancing the sultanate’s commitment to achieving carbon neutrality.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, an EA official said, “Zero neutrality, in essence, is the equilibrium achieved when emitted greenhouse gases equate to the emissions actively reduced or offset, culminating in a net-zero carbon footprint.”

She added that Oman has emerged as a forerunner in this global initiative.

EA has extended invitations to environmental consulting firms to collaborate on this national project, aiming to ensure that the system aligns with international standards and global agreements. “This system will meticulously audit greenhouse gas emissions data, ensuring mitigation targets are met yearly.”

The new system will be part of the National Zero Neutrality Programme, which intends to support Oman’s overarching strategy for carbon neutrality. It will concentrate on several sectors including electricity, urban development, transportation, industry, and oil and gas.

Regarding the authority’s efforts, the official said that Oman has devised a meticulous plan targeting five sectors responsible for the vast majority of its greenhouse gas emissions: industry, oil and gas, electricity generation, transportation, and construction.

“In September, we organised workshops to refine these sectoral strategies, addressing challenges and leveraging resources. Our objective remains clear: achieving zero emissions by 2050,” the official stated.

Oman’s 2021 carbon emissions have been assessed at 90mtCO2e. The five sectors account for 95% of these emissions.
