Muscat – Environment Authority (EA) has launched a campaign called ‘No to Plastic’ in Al Wusta.
The campaign aims to educate society about the environmental impact of plastics, particularly single-use plastic bags, and promote eco-friendly alternatives.
An official from EA highlighted the authority’s efforts to reduce plastic use. “EA has formed a specialised team, based on administrative decision No 61/2021, tasked with establishing a framework to stop the use of plastic shopping bags. This team is committed to addressing challenges stemming from the excessive use of plastic shopping bags under 50µm.”
The campaign is in line with EA’s ban, which came into effect on January 1, 2021, on the use of single-use plastic shopping bags under 50µm.
In a further step towards environmental conservation, H E Qais Mohammed al Yousef, Minister of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion, enforced a ban on the import of plastic bags, effective from January 1, 2023, under Ministerial Decision No 519/2022.
The concerted efforts of various authorities underscore a national commitment to reducing plastic consumption and its consequent environmental impact.
