Muscat – In Buraimi governorate, local community efforts are breathing new life into the once-neglected neighbourhood of Harat al Shurafa.
The initiative not only enhances its cultural heritage but also elevates its standing as a tourist destination.
Talib Ahmed al Jabri, supervisor of Falaj al Sarrani, articulated the intertwined fates of Harat al Shurafa and Falaj al Sarrani.
“The revival of Harat al Shurafa is closely tied to the ongoing Falaj al Sarrani project. While the latter has already witnessed a considerable transformation, further advancements aim to solidify Buraimi as a standout tourist attraction.”
Visitors to Harat al Shurafa are treated to an immersive walk through history. Lining the narrow pathways are ancient structures, some dating back a century, showcasing distinctive architectural designs.
“The mountain slopes adjacent to the village supplied the stones used for constructing the timeless ceilings in the harat,” explained Jabri.
Beyond mere architecture, the cohesive and interconnected designs of the houses in the harat epitomise the traditional sense of community. Remarkably, the residences are so seamlessly integrated that they appear as one continuous dwelling. As part of the restoration, even the traditional mud entrances, or ‘sabahat’, have been carefully refurbished.
Jabri emphasised the potential of such sites, surrounded by palm and lemon orchards, to be transformed into tourist hotspots.
The cultural richness extends beyond just buildings. Suleiman bin Ali al Azzani, overseeing the restoration of the Al Shurafa mosque, shared its historical significance. “The harat was a communal hub, where locals would warmly welcome guests from afar.”
Detailing the mosque’s unique design, Azzani said, “It houses two Mihrabs. One is positioned in front, catering to winter prayers, while the other ensures a cool environment during summer months, addressing the region’s soaring temperatures.”
Such restoration projects, breathing life back into the historical harats, underscore Oman’s commitment to preserving its rich heritage.
Across the sultanate, various wilayats have successfully transformed old neighbourhoods into thriving tourist accommodations, marrying the past and present seamlessly.
