3 Apr 2023 By

Muscat – The Office of the Governor of Dakhliyah held a meeting on Monday to discuss the inclusion of three Omani wilayats in the Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) for the year 2023.

Sheikh Hilal bin Said al Hajri, Governor of Dakhliyah, headed the meeting in the presence of the Omani National Committee for Education, Culture and Science.

The project is being implemented within the framework of Oman’s efforts to raise national indicators in the education field for sustainable development and achieve the targets of the Fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4), which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities.

The project aims to highlight the efforts of wilayats in areas related to sustainable development, such as quality education, youth empowerment and environmental sustainability.

The meeting discussed the work mechanisms for joining GNLC, and preparing a file to be submitted within a specified period for the same.

The Unesco GNLC, which was initiated in 2012, is an international platform that enables cities to share expertise in advocating and enhancing lifelong learning for all.

Unesco defines a learning city as one that effectively mobilises its resources in every sector to promote inclusive learning from basic to higher education; revitalises learning in families and communities; facilitates learning for and in the workplace; extends the use of modern learning technologies; enhances quality and excellence in learning; and fosters a culture of learning throughout life.

In doing so, the city enhances individual empowerment and social inclusion, economic development and cultural prosperity, and sustainable development.
