Muscat – Students of Oman have won nine medals in the ninth Gulf Mathematics Olympiad, and the first Gulf Chemistry Olympiad, which were held in Manama, Kingdom of Bahrain, from Friday to Tuesday.

In the Mathematics Olympiad, silver medals went to Al Waqqas bin Mahmoud al Khadouri and Reem bint Nabhan al Azwaniya; while four other students – Manar bint Muhammad al Dhahli, Aisha bint Abdul Qadir al Maamari, Rayan bint Abdullah al Kaabi and Al Baljaa bint Zahran al Abri – won bronze medals in the same Olympiad.

In the Chemistry Olympiad, Jumana bint Azzan al Amri won a bronze medal, whereas Mohammed bin Ahmed al Habsi and Al Rabee bin Habib al Dhafri won silver medals.

H E Dr Abdullah bin Khamis Ambosaidi, Undersecretary for Education in the Ministry of Education, expressed happiness following the grand success of these Omani students in the two prestigious international competitions.

“I am glad that most of our students participating in the Gulf Mathematical Olympiad and the Gulf Chemistry Olympiad won medals, and I am very optimistic about the ability of our students to compete in such events, both at the Gulf and the international level,” he said.

This participation of students, he added, is of benefit from a psychological standpoint as it enhances their ability to compete with others and socially helps them mix with their peers from the Gulf countries and exchanging experiences.

“The ministry aspires to benefit from this experience by developing our students for better participation in the coming years, and wishes the students more success in the future,” the Undersecretary for Education added.

The Gulf Olympiad is a periodic competition in the subjects of mathematics and chemistry for students of the member states of the Arab Education Bureau for the Gulf States, organised and supervised by the Bureau and hosted by one of the member states.

This year it was hosted by the Kingdom of Bahrain.
