Muscat – Fake phone chargers are a multi-million dollar industry. The dodgy devices put users at risk of electrocution, burns and house fires.

In order to limit the use of counterfeit phone chargers and reduce risk of bodily and property harm, an Omani startup has launched a nationwide initiative called ‘To Support Oman’.

BRQ Advanced Technology, which is licensed by Apple to manufacture mobile phone chargers and cables, took cognicance of the fact that the market is flooded with counterfeit products, and that users should be aware of the risks involved.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, CEO Saud al Mukhaini, who set up BRQ Advanced Technology in November 2020, said, “Through To Support Oman, we want to combat the spread of counterfeit chargers in the local market. We aim to spread awareness of the importance of using original chargers among community members.”

BRQ Advanced Technology manufactures two types of chargers using ‘ThunderGan’, which Mukhaini described as the most advanced charging technology in the world. Its product line includes two cables – BRQ Type-C to Type-C 100w and BRQ iPhone PD Cable (Mfi).

Mukhaini informed that the company also makes BRQ Eco- core 20w chargers, which it sells at no profit. Mukhaini intends to combat the market of counterfeit chargers with this product.

He is also credited with designing and producing a micro weather station device for use by outdoor workers and adventure enthusiasts. Billed as the smallest weather station in the world, the device is currently in production by BRQ Advanced Technology.

Besides taking his products to the international market, Mukhaini is keen to introduce scientific ideas to children at a young age in order to give them an early start in the tech world.

“We will soon launch a programme to teach electronics engineering to school students in South Sharqiyah. It will help prepare a generation capable of working in the electronics industry.”
