Muscat – The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) has announced availability of wheat kernel for the 2022/2023 season at a subsidised rate it its efforts to support farmers and to achieve self-sufficiency in food.
A statement issued by MAFWR said, ‘The ministry will provide one tonne of wheat seeds for RO300 for the new season.’
It urged farmers to buy from designated centres.
The ministry’s criteria for sale of seeds include nationality (only Omanis), a farm suitable for wheat cultivation, salinity of water in the farm should not exceed 1,500mg, and installation of a permanent irrigation system.
The last date for application to receive seeds at the subsidised rate is June end.
According to MAFWR, wheat production grew by 19 per cent in the 2020/2021 agricultural season to 2,649 tonnes.
The total area of wheat cultivation in 2020/2021 was 2,449 acres, constituting a 19.6 per cent rise over the last season. The number of wheat farmers also rose by 5.5 per cent.
