Faculty exhibition in Oman encourages students

17 May 2022 faculty exhibition

Twenty four distinctive artworks created by 13 experienced faculty members makes this exhibition an artistic voyage beyond imagination, encouraging students to step out of their boundaries

Striking a balance via a profusion of colours, themes, mediums, and techniques, where multiplicity of personalities, ethnicities, backgrounds, and styles meet the one common theme of expression, art, is the second Fine Arts Faculty Exhibition at the Scientific College of Design.

Under the patronage of Dr Juma Ali al Juma, head of private higher education institutions committee, this college exhibition is presently on display at the Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Inspiring a new generation of artists and a community of creative minds, this exhibition is one-of-a-kind. The beauty of this display is in how skillfully the various components of art and culture are weaved together to create a visionary and significant revolution for the future of art in Oman.

Each of the 24 distinctive artworks created by 13 experienced faculty members is unique and extraordinary in its own way. This faculty exhibition takes you on an artistic voyage beyond imagination, encouraging students and visitors to transcend their creative boundaries while motivating them to discover new dimensions beyond the surface of reality.

Explaining how this exhibition will benefit students, Dr Nehad Elhussein, associate professor at Scientific College of Design, said, “Students typically struggle to find inspiration to begin their artwork. This exhibition will teach them about various inspirations and how each artist achieved them in a unique way through a series of scientific steps.” The artworks display a wide range of styles, from contemporary innovation and realism to abstract art and symbolic expressionism.

Dr Nasser Palangi, a distinguished Iranian artist and associate professor teaching Visual Art at the Scientific College of Design, has four of his artworks on display at the exhibition. “Two of my artworks are in the symbolism style portraying love and kindness,” he said. “My other collages on canvas are inspired by Oman’s heritage.” Using mixed media and everyday objects, he has been able to create something very eccentric.

The process of making art is one of experimenting and exploration. And SCD’s faculty has set a good example. Through constant experimenting with diverse art forms and techniques, each artist has inspired their students and the community to reconnect with themselves and step out of their comfort zone.

Professor Abed Obed, a fine art instructor who also showcased his work, elaborated, saying, “This exhibition will provide the students and visitors, the opportunity to interact with the artists, who will be able to share their experience and expertise in order to achieve the desired outcome. We also hope to inspire everybody to keep experimenting and learning.”

While some artworks reflect the artist’s individuality, others reflect the artist’s local background and heritage. Resembling the cubism art form, Jawahar Chockkalingam, a fine art instructor, incorporated an Indian element into his abstract sculpture based on bulls and cows constructed from wood and wire. Amal Ezzat’s artwork, on the other hand, is a reflection of her personality combined with ancient Egyptian symbolism.

Students are not only inspired to create remarkable artworks as a result of this faculty exhibition, but they also gain practical experience organising and curating exhibitions, putting art terminologies into practice, and critically analysing the pieces. Maisa al Ansari is one such alumnus. She is an Omani artist and SCD graduate who now teaches photography at the college and has showcased her photographs in the exhibition, which are primarily focused on macro photography.

The Scientific College of Design and their initiatives have undoubtedly aided in the expansion of the art movement in Oman. The faculty at SCD is moulding and expanding the future of art in Oman by sowing the seeds of knowledge and imparting art education to Oman’s youth and women.
