500 homes to get rooftop solar panels in first phase

9 Dec 2020

The Authority for Public Services Regulation (APSR, formerly Authority for Electricity Regulation) has received 1,500 applications from homeowners to join the Sahim initiative in the Governorate of Muscat.

The authority informed that it has selected 500 requests in the first stage of the project, called Sahim Residential Initiative, which is a part of the National Solar Energy Initiative aiming to promote the use of clean energy resources in support of Oman’s energy diversification goals.

‘Sahim’ translates to ‘contribute’ in Arabic.

The Sahim initiative will allow wide-scale deployment of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) systems in residential premises throughout Oman. ‘The authority believes that this initiative will deliver positive net benefits to residential customers, the electricity sector and the national economy as a whole,’ the APSR stated.

In 2017, the authority launched the Sahim initiative which established a regulatory framework allowing households and businesses to install grid-connected PV systems. ‘Building on this initiative and in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the government’s policy to achieve wide-scale deployment of renewable energy, APSR is pleased to announce the launch of the first phase of its Sahim Residential Initiative,’ it said announcing the ‘Request for Proposal for Development of Residential Rooftop PV Systems’.

‘The authority is seeking, through a competitive process, to select a PV system developer for the purpose of procurement, installation, ownership and operation of rooftop PV systems on selected residential premises,’ it stated in the request for proposal (RFP). The last date for RFPs is December 31, 2020.

The Sahim initiative will provide a sustainable and affordable source of low-carbon energy. Solar power will help reduce consumers’ bills, ease Oman’s reliance on natural gas and enable the sultanate to defer investment in new grid infrastructure by using solar energy to contribute to the peak demands caused by the widespread use of air conditioning.

‘The procurement for the Sahim Residential Initiative will be in line with Oman’s successful independent power producer programme, using transparent competition to eventually award the contract to the best successfully qualified bidder.’
