MoAF surveys 1mn ha of farmland to tackle locusts

The Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MoAF) is conducting its campaigns to combat the desert locusts in various regions of the sultanate in earnest. The ministry has surveyed about 1mn hectares of farmland and sprayed 8,000lt of pesticides from mid-November 2019 to mid-February 2020. 

H E Dr Ahmed bin Nasser al Bakri, Undersecretary for Agriculture in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, chaired a meeting to follow up on the efforts made by the MoAF teams during the period from mid-November 2019 to mid-February 2020. 

H E Dr Bakri said, “The ministry teams conducted surveys over an area exceeding 1mn hectares, and control operations were carried out covering an area of 6,810 hectares, using pesticides, which amounted to about 8,000lt.” 

The meeting came out with a number of recommendations, such as the distribution of work teams, vehicles, pesticides, tools and other supplies to the areas affected by locusts according to the requirements. 

H E Dr Bakri advised the officials to have direct contact with the various segments of society and also stressed on the necessity for people to take caution in areas where the operations are conducted.
