A campaign to remove solid waste from Al Hail Beach in Seeb wilayat was conducted by the Muscat Municipality on Tuesday.
Highlighting the importance of the campaign, the civic body stressed that solid waste poses an environmental threat and spoils the aesthetics of the area. Such areas are also havens for breeding of insects and rodents. Muscat Municipality said that dumping any kind of waste is a hideous activity.
The Administrative Decision No 55/2017 of the municipality stipulates penalties and states that anyone who disposes waste in areas that are not designated for the purpose will be fined RO100.
The highest amount of fine is for disposing waste in open lands (whether fenced or not), in public squares and wadis (RO1,000). The administrative decision also stipulates a fine of RO50 for disposal of tree trimmings, old furniture and large appliances near waste bins. Throwing animal carcasses, animal waste or fertilisers in public places, waste bins or next to them, too is an offence that can attract a fine of RO100.
The offender is given a day to transport the waste to designated places. The fine is doubled in case of repeat offences.
Muscat Municipality has urged public to cooperate with it and help keep the city clean.
