Muscat – Ministry of Health (MoH) alerts the public about Mpox (formerly Monkeypox), an infectious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. The advisory details the nature of the illness, its symptoms, modes of transmission, and preventative measures are:

The initial symptoms of Mpox often mimic flu-like illness, starting with a fever, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. This is followed by a distinct rash that can manifest anywhere on the body, including the face, genitals, and anus. The rash progresses through several stages, beginning as macules before developing into papules, vesicles, pustules, and finally scabs.

The Ministry highlighted three primary ways the virus spreads:

  • Direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person, particularly someone with a rash.
  • Touching contaminated items such as bedding, towels, and clothing.
  • Prolonged face-to-face contact through respiratory droplets.

Citizens and residents are urged to take simple, effective steps to protect themselves:

  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water.
  • Avoid close physical contact with anyone exhibiting Mpox symptoms.
  • Avoid touching contaminated objects.

The advisory stresses that anyone who develops symptoms must seek medical advice immediately. Furthermore, they should isolate themselves and cover any lesions to prevent transmission to others. The Ministry of Health’s swift dissemination of this information is part of an ongoing effort to safeguard public health across the Sultanate.
