Ibri – Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has unveiled a development and investment project for the historic Harat al Raml in the wilayat of Ibri, Dhahirah as part of ongoing efforts to preserve Omani heritage and boost its role in sustainable economic development.

One of the oldest neighbourhoods in the sultanate, Harat al Raml dates back more than 300 years and sits atop the upper slopes of Jabal al Raml. The site is known for its authentic Arab-Islamic architectural character, which reflects the traditional simplicity of Omani life.

Spread over an area of 6,350sqm, the project will be carried out by Al Dhahirah International Development and Investment Company at an estimated cost of RO1mn. Construction is expected to be completed within two years of commencement.

Walid bin Hamad al Ghafri, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Dhahirah, said the project is part of the ministry’s efforts to revitalise heritage sites and transform these into integrated tourism destinations that attract visitors and investment.

“The project will stimulate tourism and enhance commercial opportunities through the establishment of cafes, restaurants, heritage inns and dedicated recreation areas,” he stated. “It will also improve public access, upgrade the surrounding environment, and highlight pride in Oman’s rich heritage.”

According to the ministry, the plan includes a heritage museum, two heritage inns, and a restaurant and café, besides 28 shops for local business owners, craftsmen and artisanal  families. Outdoor seating overlooking the mountainside will offer visitors a cultural experience blending authenticity, hospitality and natural landscapes.

The development will focus on restoring historical structures in ways that preserve the neighbourhood’s architectural identity, while promoting cultural tourism through regular events and exhibitions. The ministry expects the project to support the local economy through new job opportunities and encourage collaboration with residents and civil society groups in heritage and hospitality ventures.

‘The Harat al Raml development project represents a significant addition to Dhahirah’s cultural and architectural landscape,’ the ministry stated, adding that the initiative embodies the balance between heritage preservation and economic growth, ensuring that historical sites continue to serve as cultural and developmental assets for future generations.
