Al Kamil Wa al Wafi – Environment Authority (EA) signed an agreement on Tuesday to develop Al Saleel Nature Reserve in Al Kamil Wa al Wafi, South Sharqiyah at a total cost of RO2.6mn. The project is being funded by Oman LNG and Oman Indian Fertiliser Company (OMIFCO).
The agreement was signed by Dr Abdullah bin Ali al Amri, Chairman of EA, and Dr Amor bin Nasser al Matani, CEO of Oman LNG Development Foundation, in the presence of Dr Yahya bin Badr al Maawali, Governor of South Sharqiyah.
Nizar bin Salem al Araimi, Director of the Environment Department in South Sharqiyah, said the project aims to transform the reserve into an eco-tourism destination that balances natural resource conservation with sustainable economic development. He added that it will provide educational and tourism experiences while preserving the area’s environmental character.
The project includes a main building, an integrated veterinary clinic and enclosures for birds, wild animals and special species, along with service and information facilities. It is expected to protect wildlife and vegetation, particularly endangered species, revitalise tourism in the governorate, create new job opportunities and raise environmental awareness.
Covering an area of 220sqkm, Al Saleel Nature Reserve is home to a variety of trees and animals, including the Arabian gazelle, and is one of Oman’s most significant natural habitats.
