The project is part of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s efforts to preserve Oman’s cultural legacy and promote its historical landmarks.
Located opposite the famous Ain Al Kasfa Spring in Harat Aini, the tower is among Rustaq’s most prominent defence and architectural landmarks, deeply rooted in the wilayat’s historic urban fabric.
The comprehensive restoration plan includes strengthening the tower’s foundations and walls with locally sourced stone, rebuilding damaged internal sections, repairing structural cracks, and replacing deteriorated mud bricks before coating the entire structure with sarooj, a traditional lime-based plaster used in Omani heritage buildings.
An adjoining room has already been restored, including installation of a new roof. Current works focus on repairing the western side of the tower, rebuilding internal walls and ceilings, and installing new doors, windows, lighting and air-conditioning systems – all in line with preserving the site’s original architectural character.

Mohammed bin Hamid al Jahafi, Assistant Director of Department of Heritage and Tourism in South Batinah, said, “The importance of Al Kasfa Tower lies in its strategic location opposite Ain Al Kasfa, making it a major tourist attraction. The ministry has therefore prioritised its restoration to ensure its preservation for future generations.”
He added that the project is expected to be completed by the end of June next year.
The restoration underscores the ministry’s commitment to protecting Rustaq’s cultural and architectural identity while supporting national efforts to revitalise heritage landmarks as sustainable tourism assets that contribute to the local economy.
