Muscat – An Omani adventurer is on a remarkable 1,200km cycling journey from the town of Ibri to the lush landscapes of Salalah with the mission of promoting the sultanate’s tourism treasures and preserving its oral heritage.

Nooh bin Salim al Kalbani, 29, set off from his home in Al Najeed in Ibri on September 6. Along the way, he is documenting dialects, folk tales and cultural traditions while capturing the essence of Oman’s landscapes through photographs and videos.

Speaking to Muscat Daily from Nizwa, Kalbani described his routine. “I start cycling at six in the morning and continue till evening, with a short break at midday. Each day, I cover between 100km to 150km.”

His route has already taken him past iconic heritage and tourist destinations including Jabal Shams, the ancient wilayats of Al Hamra and Bahla, and the bustling Nizwa Souq and Nizwa Fort, where he observed traditional crafts such as weaving and pottery-making. His next stops include Manah, Adam and Haima before his final destination, Salalah.

Kalbani described his expedition as “a visual narrative of Oman’s land and people”.

“This journey turns the spotlight on the beauty of Oman’s nature and heritage, linking the past with the present while opening doors to the future. It is also about inspiring young people with a spirit of challenge and adventure.”

This is not his first long-distance endeavour. In 2018, Kalbani cycled 900km from Nizwa to Salalah to promote the khareef season. He described searing summer heat and strong winds as the biggest challenges, but training and preparations have helped him endure the physical demands.

For Kalbani, cycling is more than a sport. “It has shaped my character, taught me patience, discipline and resilience, and given me confidence in my abilities,” he said.

Carrying only basic supplies, canned food and a tent, he camps under the open sky, sharing his journey with thousands on social media. “Through these trips, I want to project a bright image of Oman – the land of peace and ancient history.”

His message to young Omanis is clear. “Believe in your potential, pursue sport and work hard to achieve your aspirations.” Kalbani plans to continue his cycling adventures across the sultanate, combining his passion for exploration with his commitment to promoting Oman’s cultural identity.
