Salalah – More than 300 people from across Oman and the GCC took part in an 8km hike last week in the scenic Ain Jarziz area of Salalah. Organised by Ibri Heroes Team for Walking and Adventures, the trek aimed to promote physical fitness while showcasing the natural beauty of Dhofar during khareef. Participants walked in groups waving Omani flags and singing patriotic songs, adding colour and vibrancy to the event.

Speaking to Muscat Daily, Mohammed bin Humaid al Shamli, head of the team, said the event was designed to go beyond exercise. “Hiking is a lifestyle that contributes to both physical and mental health. It is also an opportunity for people to connect with each other while discovering Oman’s stunning landscapes.”

He added that the team strives to make each gathering multi-dimensional, combining sports with tourism, culture and environmental awareness.

“This is what sets our activities apart and reflects our belief that sports can serve as an effective platform to promote the sultanate as a distinctive tourist destination.”

Founded in 2020 with 35 members, the team now organises events across Oman to spread a culture of exercise and help address health issues such as obesity, diabetes and high blood pressure. It also works to promote domestic tourism and raise awareness of environmental conservation.

The Salalah event was further enriched by participation of classic car clubs from across the GCC, highlighting cultural ties and adding a heritage element to the gathering.

Royal Oman Police ensured safety along the route, while Environment Authority distributed seeds for planting as part of a reforestation initiative. The Directorate General of Culture and Sports in Dhofar also provided logistical support to ensure the event’s success.

The hike concluded at 6:30pm with distribution of commemorative shields and gifts to participants in an atmosphere that reflected community spirit and cooperation.

Shamli said the team will continue to host similar events across the sultanate. “We want to keep encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyles while also discovering the rich natural and cultural heritage of our country. Regular exercise is an investment in health and life.”
