Rustaq – South Batinah witnessed a 15.8% increase in visitors to its tourist and historical landmarks in 2024, welcoming 56,203 tourists compared to 48,493 in 2023, according to Ministry of Heritage and Tourism.

November recorded the highest footfall with 10,962 visitors, accounting for 19.5% of the total annual visitors. February followed with 8,436 visitors, while January saw 7,839.

Wakan village, a top attraction in Wadi Mistal, recorded a 4.1% rise in visitors to 36,759 in 2024 compared to 35,302 in 2023. February was its peak month, drawing 6,499 visitors, coinciding with the village’s famous apricot blossom season.

The increase in visitor numbers has fueled expansion of tourist facilities in the governorate. By the end of 2024, South Batinah had 162 licensed establishments, including resorts, hotels, guesthouses and heritage lodges. Guesthouses made up 57.5% of these – 95 in total – followed by 42 green lodges and 11 hotels.

The governorate is home to 495 registered archaeological and historical sites, including castles, forts, old mosques and ancient neighbourhoods. Rustaq leads in historical sites, with 250 landmarks (50.5% of the total), followed by Nakhal (92 sites) and Al Awabi (62 sites).

A total of 47 historical sites have been restored, including two castles, seven forts, 11 towers and 25 mosques.

Dr Al Moatasem al Hilali, Director of Heritage and Tourism in South Batinah, highlighted its diverse tourism offerings, from island excursions in Sawadi Beach and diving in Daymaniyat Islands to adventure trails in Wadi Bani Awf, Balad Sayt and Wakan. “South Batinah’s blend of history and adventure continues to attract visitors seeking unique cultural and outdoor experiences.”
