Salalah – The 5th GCC Petroleum Media Forum – an event that brings together senior officials and media persons from around the region under one roof to discuss various issues facing the oil and gas sector – began in Salalah in southern Oman’s green landscape on Wednesday.

The two-day forum, hosted by Oman’s Ministry of Energy and Minerals, in collaboration with the GCC Secretariat General, aims to bolster the media’s role in addressing energy issues, particularly in the oil and gas sector of the region.

Under the patronage of H E Mohsin bin Hamad al Hadhrami, Undersecretary in the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, the event has brought together media professionals, petroleum industry officials and experts from across the GCC countries.

The primary goal of the forum is to enhance communication and cooperation between media personnel and energy sector experts and address challenges related to oil and gas. The forum also seeks to update media professionals of the latest sector developments and confront rumors related to oil and gas issues.

In addition, the forum also provided a platform to discuss energy related issues, exchange experiences, and contribute to developing the skills of media professionals in this field.

In his opening address, H E Hadhrami highlighted the significance of the forum. “Hosting this event in Oman underscores the strong cooperation among GCC countries and aims to improve communication and understanding in the oil and gas sector. This forum aims to highlight the sector’s importance and facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences between media and industry experts,” he said.

“We are aware of the challenges faced by the energy sector. We should strive to provide accurate and objective information to the local and international audience,” he added.

Dr Mohammed Falah al Rashidi, Director of the Energy Department at the GCC Secretariat General, emphasised the media’s role in guiding public opinion and countering misinformation.

“The oil and gas sector plays a crucial role amidst global energy challenges and rapid developments. It is vital for enhancing energy security, sustainable development, and transitioning to renewable energy sources.”

Dr Amer bin Nasser al Matani, CEO of the Oman LNG Development Foundation, addressed the need to reduce carbon emissions, protect the environment, and advance social responsibility programmess.

He highlighted Oman’s initiatives in clean energy, including leveraging solar and wind resources and promoting green hydrogen projects. “Technological advancements in the energy sector are crucial for our progress,” he added.

The first day of the forum featured discussion sessions and workshops focused on developing media professionals’ skills in the energy field, and highlighting energy transformations and the importance of global energy security.

The forum also addressed issues such as environmental and social sustainability in the energy sector and media’s role in tackling future challenges.
