Muscat – Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR) announced a new fish farming project in the wilayat of Seeb, Muscat on Wednesday.

The project, valued at RO30mn, underscores the ministry’s commitment to enhancing Oman’s aquaculture sector.

Undertaken by United Fish Farming Company, the project site, situated 7km offshore, offers convenient access and ensures essential resources for farming operations.

Spread over 152.15 hectares, the project will employ floating cages to farm European sea bream, with an expected production capacity of 5,000 tonnes in its initial phase.

United Fish Farming Company anticipates annual production to eventually reach 10,000 tonnes, thus enhancing the ability to meet local demand.

Additionally, it has signed an agreement with Madayn Company in Sohar to set up a fish feed production project of 100,000 tonnes capacity. This strategic project aims to cater to the Omani market’s needs and facilitate global expansion.

MAFWR’s plans include establishing a fish hatchery capable of producing up to 20mn fingerlings. These efforts are designed to promote environmental sustainability of Oman’s fisheries sector, utilising cutting-edge technologies and sustainable agricultural practices.

MAFWR has designated suitable sites for fish farming projects and is providing essential technical and administrative support to facilitate implementation. The aim is to establish an advanced and sustainable framework for the fish farming sector, aligning with international best practices.

A nominal fee is being imposed for the use of allocated project sites to attract investments in aquaculture, making Oman an appealing environment for such ventures.

MAFWR’s efforts are focused on bolstering the fish farming industry in Oman to consolidate its role in the national economy.

These efforts also aim to contribute significantly to food security and create employment opportunities within the sector.

The ministry’s overarching goals include meeting domestic market demand, expanding into international markets, and optimising the utilisation of fish resources in the sultanate.
