Muscat – Oman produced yet another sparkling display to defeat Poland in the third-place play-off in the first-ever men’s FIH Hockey5s Men’s World Cup.
Rashad Al Fazari opened the scoring for Oman in the seventh minute only for Poland’s Damian Jarzembowski to equalise in the 14th as the teams were tied 1-1 at halftime.
But Oman came after the breather even more determined and took the lead just a minute into the second period through Aiman Madit. Though Poland yet again equalised through Jakub Hołosyniuk, when Fahad Al Lawati scored Oman’s third, they had no answers.
Oman’s captain Sami al Laun was delighted with their performance. “I want to thank my teammates for this performance,” said Al Laun.
“We have finished third in this World Cup which was held in our country. It means a lot for us players. And for me it is a great moment to be here and win against Poland. This is a big achievement for the sport in our country. Today we showed the world how hockey is going in our country”
Later on in the final, Netherlands quelled the challenge of Malaysia 5-2 to win the title.
A brace from Yannick Van Der Drift and goals from Pepijn Reyenga, Sander De Wijn and Jamie Van Aart helped the Dutch ease their way to the title.
Akhimullah Anuar and Muhammad Omar scored Malaysia’s goals.
On Tuesday, Oman went down fighting to the Netherlands 5-3 in the semifinal.
The Dutch dictated matters in the first half and built up a 3-0 lead before the break. Oman fought back well to win the second half, but the Netherlands used all their experience to control possession and dictate the pace.
The Netherlands defeated India in the last-eight match.
Malaysia overcame Trinidad and Tobago in the last eight before putting it past a spirited Poland.
Earlier, India defeated Egypt 6-4 to take fifth position with the North Africans ending up in sixth. Kenya defeated Trinidad & Tobago to finish in seventh.
