New York – The Sultanate of Oman has commended the central role of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in promoting peaceful settlements and resolving disputes by peaceful means in accordance with the provisions and principles of the UN Charter.
In a speech before the United Nations General Assembly, which convened to discuss Item 73 of the report of ICJ, Mohammed Ali al Shehhi, member of Oman’s permanent delegation to the UN in New York, underscored Oman’s commitment to the principles and the UN Charter, which, he said, stipulate respect for international norms and laws, non-interference in the internal affairs of countries, settling disputes between countries by peaceful means, preventing the use of force or threat of force, supporting cooperation and enhancing opportunities for dialogue among nations.
Oman reiterated its position in support of the ICJ’s mandates aimed at adhering to provisions of international law and the deep-rooted principles of the UN Charter.
Oman valued the ICJ’s role in consolidating ties among UN organs, notably the ICJ in its capacity as the UN’s main judicial body.
Shehhi explained that Oman reaffirms its stance on the necessity of peaceful settlement of disputes and non-use of force or threat of force, as indicated in the UN Charter and UN principles.
The Sultanate of Oman supported UN General Assembly’s Resolution No. 247/77, dated 30 December 2022, in which the UN General Assembly requested the ICJ to issue an advisory opinion on the legal consequences arising from Israel’s persistent violation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, Israel’s long-term occupation of Palestinian lands, its unlawful settlement and annexation of Palestinian territories occupied since 1967 and on the legal consequences of Israel’s policies and practices emanating from such occupation and implications of the same to all countries and the UN as a collective body.
Oman submitted its written argument before the ICJ in The Hague, pursuant to UN General Assembly’s Resolution No. 247/77 requesting the Justice to issue a jurisdiction on the consequences of Israel’s persistent violations of the right of Palestinian people to self-determination.
The statement also reaffirmed Oman’s permanent stance in supporting the Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and expressed Oman’s position backing the establishment of an independent Palestinian State with Al Quds Al Sharqiya (East Jerusalem) as its capital.
