Muscat – Dr Ahmed al Mandhari, WHO Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean, has stressed the significance of developing a national policy for Oman’s healthcare system.

Mirroring Dr Mandhari’s view, H E Dr Fatima Mohammed al Ajmi, Ministry of Health’s Undersecretary for Administrative, Financial and Planning Affairs, has stated that with Oman’s national health policy developed nearly three decades ago, there is an urgent need to update it.

This came in her opening speech at a workshop on Thursday for the final discussions on the National Health Policy Document for the Sultanate of Oman.

Held in collaboration with WHO, H E Dr Hilal bin Ali al Sabti, Minister of Health, presided over the one-day workshop, which was attended by representatives of various sectors.

Dr Mandhari commended WHO member states’ efforts in formulating or updating their national health policies. He emphasised that a well-rounded policy serves as the foundation of a robust and adaptable health system. “The policy sets strategic directives, prioritises healthcare aspects, and fosters partnerships to achieve sustainable development.”

Highlighting the significance of updating the national health policy, H E Dr Fatima emphasised the vital role it plays in guiding the country’s health sector towards the goals outlined in Oman Vision 2040.

She stated that comprehensive and sustainable health coverage, high-quality healthcare for the entire population, and community participation are among the priorities outlined in the policy. “The document also aims to establish an advanced health system equipped with modern technologies, supported by sustainable resources, and governed by effective policies.

“Collaborations and partnerships are key to realising the objectives of the national health policy,” the undersecretary reiterated.
