Muscat – As part of its obligation to assist mobility and access of people with special needs, Muscat Municipality is participating in the first forum dedicated for people with disabilities. The forum was opened on Monday under the patronage of Sayyid Saud bin Hilal al Busaidi, Governor of Muscat, and finished on Wednesday.
The municipality has set a number of laws and legislations that take into account the needs of people with disabilities before licensing the construction of projects and public buildings in Muscat governorate ‘so that this category be able to move easily and conveniently’.

Slopes
The rules require all public buildings to have slopes for easy mobility of people with disabilities. The slopes should include adequate protection standards.
Vehicle parking
Muscat Municipality, in coordination with the concerned authorities, allocates parking spaces for vehicles of persons with disabilities in all public and private parking lots. These parking spaces are near the entrances and exits of the buildings, marked by special parking signs.
Side walks
When designing the sidewalks and pathways, the municipality takes into account that they are free from obstacles, and are non-slippery, so that they are suitable for wheelchair users with special needs.
Restrooms
Public toilets are also prepared to serve people with special needs with the provision of spaces and detailed standards for the dimensions and measurements of the room.
