Funding, training and more

18 Dec 2022 By

Muscat – In the last few decades, Oman has made significant strides in several sectors, including education, health and business.

Last year, the Ministry of Economy announced initiatives to support and develop the small and medium enterprise (SME) sector in partnership with the Authority for Small and Medium Enterprises Development.

The move was aimed at accelerating the recovery of these enterprises from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and maximising their contribution to economic activities. The government as well as private companies have come together to commit to sustainable business models.

But are SMEs in Oman given enough support by the government? What can be done to help them prosper? Here is what Muscat Daily readers said –

The government is paying more attention to SMEs by slashing fees and service charges. But the government alone can’t do everything. Next, banks should come forward to help the SMEs by simplifying loan procedures.

Government is supportive but more support is needed, mainly in training and guidance. A relative started a food truck in Amerat, but he had no training in the business and he closed it in some time. Also we need support from banks in providing us loans and from private companies in giving us a helping hand for at least one year.

We must understand that the success of businesses and SMEs is not dependent only on the help from government. Other entities should also come forward to help, including private companies. Additionally, financing may not be the only help required; space and services may also be needed.

Now there are many SMEs in the country and they exist only because of the support of the government. The government has always been motivating citizens to start their own enterprises. The paper work and documentation for startups have been made uncomplicated to motivate entrepreneurs.

SMEs in Oman need support by way of more projects and tenders being reserved exclusively for them. Tangible and focused marketing efforts will help these organisations connect with customers and also help build their brand.
