Muscat – The Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) has launched a public awareness campaign under the National Risk Register, outlining key safety measures to be followed in the event of a radiation incident or nuclear contamination.

The campaign aims to raise public awareness and strengthen emergency preparedness by providing clear guidance on how individuals should respond to a radiation-related incident.

The authority advised people to immediately move into the nearest safe building and remain indoors. They should stay away from windows, doors and external walls, keep windows and doors closed, and switch off ventilation systems that draw air from outside until official instructions are issued.

People who are outdoors when an incident occurs should carefully remove their outer layer of clothing and place it in a tightly sealed plastic bag. They should then wash exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water.

The CDAA also advised the public not to consume exposed or potentially contaminated food. Instead, people should use food and drinking water stored in sealed containers and follow official instructions regarding the safety of locally available food and water.

The authority said its role includes responding immediately to emergencies, conducting an initial assessment in coordination with the relevant authorities, and taking necessary protective measures. Evacuation procedures may also be implemented when required.

The CDAA stressed that public awareness and strict adherence to official instructions are essential to protecting lives and reducing risks during emergencies.

The authority also reminded the public that its emergency reporting and inquiry service is available around the clock on 9999.
