Muscat – The upcoming Sayyid Tarik bin Taimur Cultural Complex has launched an open call for commissioned artworks, inviting artists and designers from Oman and abroad to contribute works drawing on the country’s heritage while exploring contemporary forms of artistic expression.

The initiative, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, is open to artists and designers of any nationality, whether based in Oman or internationally.

Both emerging and established practitioners are eligible to submit proposals, while collaborations between artists and artisans are strongly encouraged.

The commissioned works are expected to draw inspiration from Omani heritage, traditions and seafaring history, while incorporating contemporary concepts, technology and design.

The guidelines also encourage artists to engage with performance, music, storytelling and architecture, and to work directly with local craftspeople using traditional techniques.

Proposals should offer fresh perspectives on the continuity and evolution of Omani culture, combining established traditions with new approaches to artistic practice.

The scope of commissioned works is broad and may include installations, sculptures, mixed-media pieces, design-led artworks and textile-based works.

Contemporary craft, as well as digital and hybrid practices, are also included among the forms being considered.

The open call reflects an effort to bring together traditional craftsmanship and contemporary artistic practices within the new cultural complex.

By encouraging collaboration between artists and craftspeople, the initiative also seeks to create works that connect Oman’s cultural heritage with evolving forms of creative expression.
