Buraimi – An agricultural city is planned in the Mashrooh area of the wilayat of Sunainah in Buraimi to boost local agricultural production, make better use of the area’s natural resources and support Oman’s efforts to achieve greater self-sufficiency in food production.

The proposal was discussed at the seventh meeting of Buraimi Municipal Council for 2026, held on Thursday under the chairmanship of Sayyid Dr Hamad bin Ahmed Al Busaidi, Governor of Buraimi and Chairman of the council.

The agricultural city is proposed to capitalise on the area’s natural potential and support the development of agricultural activities in the governorate.

The meeting also reviewed a range of service, development and urban planning issues, as well as field reports and proposals submitted to the council.

It approved several new internal road projects and discussed the awarding of the second phases of the Buraimi Oasis–City Centre and Crystal Lake projects. It also reviewed plans to complete a kiosks project and launch of the fourth batch of the Irada initiative.

Members approved the minutes of the council’s sixth meeting for 2026 and reviewed the events plan for 2026–2027, which include Winter Buraimi events, a camel race in Sunainah, National Day celebrations, the Lights Festival and Mahdah Drag Race.

Additionally, the council reviewed field visits to inspect internal roads in Al Buraimi wilayat and the needs of residents in Al Muallaqah, along with recommendations from its health, environmental and development committees.

Urban planning discussions included an improvement initiative, development of the old Hamasa Souq and architectural challenges linked to road paving in Al Gharifa.

The council also discussed allocating sites for agricultural waste and the status of existing farms and livestock enclosures outside approved planning schemes.
