Salalah – The fourth edition of the Independent Living for Persons with Disabilities conference began in Salalah on Wednesday, bringing together officials, experts and specialists from Oman, the GCC and Arab countries to promote the rights, independence and social inclusion of persons with disabilities.

Hosted by the Ministry of Social Development, the two-day meet is organised by the League of Arab States and the Union of Arab Chambers, in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

The conference aims to empower persons with disabilities to choose their lifestyles and places of residence and ensure equitable access to community services and facilities. It also seeks to remove barriers, improve accessibility and support the development of national policies and programmes that promote inclusion and empowerment.

The opening was presided over by H H Sayyid Marwan bin Turki Al Said, Governor of Dhofar, in the presence of H E Dr Laila bint Ahmed Al Najjar, Minister of Social Development.

Speaking on behalf of the ministry, Undersecretary H E Dr Abdullah bin Hamoud Al Harthi said the conference reflects Oman’s commitment to translating its objectives into tangible measures that improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities.

He said the gathering would open opportunities for integration and sustainable empowerment, reflecting Oman’s focus on people as the core of development.

H E Al Harthi highlighted the role of technological advances, artificial intelligence and innovative solutions in strengthening independence and enabling persons with disabilities to participate actively in society and the knowledge-based economy.

He stressed that meaningful empowerment requires cooperation between the government and private sectors, civil society organisations and regional and international partners.

He also emphasised the importance of focusing on the abilities and potential of persons with disabilities, removing barriers and involving them in decisions affecting their lives.

The conference seeks to facilitate stronger policies and partnerships that support independent living and equal participation in development.
