Muscat – Muscat governorate will conduct a comprehensive survey of government and private buildings and public facilities to assess compliance of these with accessibility standards for persons with disabilities.

The team tasked with carrying out the survey held a meeting on Tuesday at the headquarters of the Ministry of Social Development to discuss the working mechanism and establish the organisational framework for implementing its tasks in coordination with relevant authorities.

The survey will cover targeted buildings and facilities and assess the extent to which these meet approved accessibility standards. The initiative aims to ensure that persons with disabilities can access and benefit from services and facilities easily and independently.

Dr Salim bin Saif Al Shuili, head of the team, said the formation of the team reflects the government’s commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of persons with disabilities.

“The team will ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy all their rights and strengthens the efforts undertaken by Oman to promote and protect a culture of human rights,” he said.

He added that the initiative supports implementation of the Law on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, promulgated by Royal Decree No 92/2025, as well as Oman’s accession to international agreements and treaties concerned with protecting and promoting human rights.

Comprising representatives from several relevant authorities, the team will prepare and implement a fieldwork plan, identify priorities and set timelines by sector, besides coordinating with concerned authorities to facilitate the survey.

Its responsibilities also include preparing a comprehensive list of targeted buildings and classifying these by sector, including government buildings, public facilities and private premises.

The initiative is part of efforts to create a more inclusive and accessible environment in Muscat governorate, ensuring that buildings and facilities do not present barriers to persons with disabilities, enabling them to access services and facilities independently and on an equal basis.
