Muscat – Work is advancing on the Sayyid Tarik bin Taimur Cultural Complex in Seeb, a 400,000sqm development that will bring together some of Oman’s most important cultural institutions, including the National Library, National Archives and National Theatre.

The project is one of the country’s largest investments in cultural infrastructure and is intended to create a central destination for learning, performance, research and public engagement.

At the heart of the development will be a 23,000sqm National Library and a 22,500sqm National Archives, alongside a 16,300sqm National Theatre comprising a 1,000-seat main auditorium and a smaller 252-seat venue.

The complex will also include a 13,165sqm Cultural Plaza, four facilities buildings and an 8,000sqm Energy and Data Centre. These will be arranged around an urban plaza with landscaped gardens, water features and a large canopy structure designed as one of the development’s architectural focal points.

According to Mace Consult, which has served as project management consultant alongside the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth since 2022, the canopy’s structural steelwork has reached substantial completion.

Progress has also been made on external infrastructure and utility works, while internal and external finishes are continuing across the development.

Mace is providing programme management, commercial oversight and delivery assurance for the project, including coordination between stakeholders and oversight of design development.

Dr Samir Al Azri, Project Director at the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, described the development as a strategic investment in the country’s cultural future.

“The Sayyid Tarik bin Taimur Cultural Complex stands as a testament to the Sultanate of Oman’s ongoing commitment to fostering culture, knowledge and creativity in accordance with the objectives of Oman Vision 2040,” he said.

Once completed, the project is expected to provide a permanent home for major national collections and archives while creating new spaces for theatre, exhibitions, public programmes and community activity.

Its scale also reflects a broader shift in Oman’s infrastructure priorities, with cultural projects increasingly being developed alongside transport, tourism and urban investments as part of efforts to improve quality of life and build institutions capable of serving future generations.
